Siliguri: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) recorded a substantial increase in revenue and tourist footfall in the calendar year 2025 compared to 2024, reflecting a growing interest in heritage and premium tourism in the region. In a significant move to expand its global presence, the mountain railway will also participate for the first time in the South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in New Delhi.
According to DHR director Rishav Choudhary, the growth was driven by improved tourism infrastructure, premium heritage experiences, and stronger engagement with local communities. Restoration work is currently underway on 15 additional heritage coaches to enhance passenger comfort while preserving the railway's historic legacy.
"DHR's earnings rose from Rs 21.2 crore in 2024 to Rs 24.6 crore in 2025. Tourist footfall also saw a sharp increase, from 1.7 lakh visitors to 2.1 lakh visitors during the same period. Our focus was on balancing heritage conservation with modern tourism needs. By investing in infrastructure and people, we are not only transporting passengers but also contributing directly to the local economy," Choudhary said.
DHR officials said that the rise in tourist arrivals created new employment opportunities and boosted small businesses across the hill region.
To promote DHR internationally, the railway will participate in SATTE at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, from Feb 25 to 27. "We will highlight the rich history of DHR and introduce our new ride experiences," Choudhary said.
