  • Kolkata: From providing annual support of Rs 4,000 to landless agricultural labourers to increasing man days for a 100-day work scheme, the Bengal budget on Thursday aimed to bring more people from the agricultural sector into the social security net.

The budget also mentioned an Agro-Industrial Park at Singur. The state budget stipulates that landless agricultural labourers will receive annual support of Rs 4,000 each, paid in 2 instalments of Rs 2,000—1 during the Rabi season and the other during the Kharif season. CM Mamata Banerjee said, "We already have the Krishak Bandhu scheme. Farmers who have more than 1 acre of land get Rs 10,000, while farmers with smaller plots get Rs 4,000. Many farm labourers work on land owned by someone else; they too will now receive assistance of Rs 4,000."

State finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said, "A database will be prepared for eligible workers who do not own agricultural land and, therefore, are not entitled to the Krishak Bandhu (Natun) Scheme."

"Many farmers are dependent on pumps for water. They paid around Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 to the govt. If they resorted to private players, the cost would go up to Rs 3,000. They were exploited. From now on, this service is free for them," the CM said.

Bhattacharya said,"The state is developing an Agro-Industrial Park at Singur in Hooghly over 7.6 acres at a cost of around Rs 10 crore."
