  • Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday filed its first charge sheet before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act court in Kolkata in the multi-crore financial irregularities case linked to state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The ED named former principal Sandip Ghosh as main accused and also listed private vendors Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra as accused beneficiaries. Hazra Medical, a supplier of medicines and medical equipment to the hospital, was also named.

The case is being pursued as a money-laundering matter after the ED registered an enforcement case information report (ECIR) to trace the alleged money trail.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has been running a parallel probe and earlier filed its charge sheet in the financial irregularities case, while also investigating the "larger conspiracy" behind the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor on the hospital premises.

Ghosh is in judicial remand following his arrest by the CBI on charges related to the alleged irregularities. The CBI charge sheet described a significant rise in assets and properties of the accused, particularly Ghosh, after his appointment, and identified him as the alleged mastermind.

The investigation originated from a petition by former hospital official Akhtar Ali seeking a CBI probe into alleged irregularities during Ghosh's tenure; the Calcutta High Court ordered the investigation and the Supreme Court upheld it.

The alleged irregularities include manipulation of tenders, awarding infrastructure contracts to private agencies while bypassing the state Public Works Department, and the alleged sale of organs from unidentified bodies meant for autopsy. CBI said Ghosh benefited financially from alleged organ sales and reported that from 2021, an average of 60 bodies per financial year went unaccounted for.

The hospital came under national focus after the rape-murder of a trainee doctor. Her body was found in a conference room on Aug 9, 2024. Agencies
