  • Manbazar (Purulia): A first-year student at Deben Mahata Govt Medical College and Hospital in Purulia lodged a complaint against 15-odd seniors for brutally assaulting him. Two of them, the primary accused, were suspended and told to vacate the hostel.

"Following the victim's complaint, a meeting of the anti-ragging committee was held in the presence of both parties on Friday. It was decided to suspend the two primary accused," said Sukamal Bishayi, MSVP of the college.

The first-year student, a resident of Domkal in Murshidabad, alleged Rishabh Kumar Singh of second year and Ayan Kumar Bagchi of fourth year had been tormenting him for several days. Around Monday midnight, 14-15 students, at the behest of Singh and Bagchi, ambushed him on the boys' hostel campus and thrashed him mercilessly, leading to multiple bruises and welts on his back.

On Monday morning, the victim sought medical help and submitted a complaint to the college's anti-ragging committee. His parents also arrived in Purulia on Friday. A committee meeting was held and once the allegations were proved, the authorities announced the decision to suspend Singh and Bagchi, who were also told to vacate the hostel.
