  • Dhantala (Nadia): A 21-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu was arrested on Thursday while attempting to illegally cross the India-Bangladesh border through the fenced area in Nadia. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Dhantala police station, near the Duttapulia border. Sources said that she tried to cross the border to meet her lover in Bangladesh.

According to sources, the woman was trying to cross the fencing and enter Bangladesh when she was spotted by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed in the area. The jawans immediately intercepted and detained her. At around 1:30 am, the BSF handed her over to Dhantala police.

The arrested woman, police said, is a resident of Tamil Nadu. Police probe revealed that she had recently come into contact with a young man from Bangladesh through social media, which gradually developed into a romantic relationship. Driven by the desire to meet her lover, she travelled to Bengal and tried to cross the international border illegally.

On Thursday morning, Dhantala police produced her before the Ranaghat Sub-Divisional Court for further legal proceedings.

Officials said that security along the Nadia border has been significantly tightened in recent times. In view of the prevailing tensions in India-Bangladesh relations, the BSF has intensified surveillance to prevent illegal infiltration.
