Kolkata: An app-cab driver has been arrested for allegedly misbehaving with two female passengers. Police said the incident was reported on Tuesday evening when a 42-year-old woman raised an alarm near the Diamond Harbour Traffic Guard at Behala Chowrasta crossing after finding that the accused was trying to film her son's girlfriend without her consent. This drew a crowd. Cops were prompted into intervening to prevent any escalation after the driver tried to threaten the woman into silence.
According to police, the complainant booked an app cab from Deshapriya Park to Sarsuna Satellite Township in Behala. She was travelling with her son's girlfriend, police said. During the ride, the driver allegedly kept adjusting the rear-view mirror and repeatedly stared at the younger woman in a manner the passengers found objectionable and inappropriate. He also allegedly tried to film her.
Police said the passengers objected to the driver's conduct when the vehicle reached James Long Sarani. The matter heated up after the driver refused to take Raja Rammohan Roy Road via Karunamoyee Bridge-Siriti, as suggested by the passengers. When the cab reached the Diamond Harbour Traffic Guard, the driver allegedly argued with the women, behaved rudely, and continued the conduct.
Traffic Guard personnel detained the driver at the spot, citing the tense situation and the possibility of an untoward incident if he was not taken into custody. Investigators said they examined witnesses at the scene and recorded their statements. The complainant was asked to submit a written complaint, following which, a case was registered and an investigation was taken up under the orders of the Thakurpukur Police Station OC.
Police said the accused, Sujay Kumar Manna (48), was arrested from Thakurpukur Police Station after legal formalities were completed, and the grounds of arrest were communicated to him and his family. The vehicle was seized on Wednesday in the presence of witnesses and deposited in the police station malkhana. Police said the accused underwent a medical examination and was found to have no injury or complaint before being kept in the lock-up.
