  • Kolkata: Two men, Mohammad Isha and Sheikh Golam, were arrested for vandalising a century-old club famed for its Nabodurga Puja, in Narendrapur on Thursday. Club officials allege that the attack was led by a member of the club itself.

Witnessed said the miscreants reportedly stormed into the club's puja office around 7.30 am. Air conditioners, TV sets, refrigerators, computers, fans and lights were smashed, while cupboards were ransacked. The attackers allegedly decamped with cash and important documents after looting the premises.

Locals said trouble began following an argument between two groups during a morning walk. After this, a group of men entered the club by breaking the iron gate and main door. The rampage reportedly continued for over two hours.

By the time club members, including the secretary and working president, reached the spot, the situation already spiralled out of control. The club said that its secretary, Nandkishore Singh, and several other members were manhandled while trying to intervene. The miscreants were allegedly armed and issued threats of dire consequences.

A senior said most of the stolen items were already recovered and raids are on to trace the prime accused.
