Find other lodgings for CISF jawans staying in Chinese school: HC to state
Times of India | 10 February 2026
Kolkata: A Calcutta High Court Judge on Monday asked the state to inform the court of an alternative arrangement for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel currently housed in Pei May Chinese High School in Tangra.
The school management had moved court, seeking the eviction of the jawans so that the premises were available to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Feb 16. According to the school authorities, they agreed to provide the school premises for two months when the state approached them for help to urgently accommodate the CISF personnel deployed at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital after the rape-murder incident in Aug 2024. Since then, 18 months have passed.
While the counsel representing the school and the Chinese community said the 18 rooms in the school were provided temporarily for two months to the special commissioner of the home and hill affairs department to accommodate CISF personnel, the state argued the rooms were still required to maintain peace and order in the area. The state also said it spent Rs 42.7 lakh on renovations and sought six months to find an alternative location.
The applicant said a Chinese New Year programme was scheduled on the premises on Feb 16 and the presence of CISF personnel would cause issues.
Hearing the matter, Judge Krishna Rao said, "What is the state doing? Where is the money going? After the term ends, the authorities are not providing any place or taking any action for them. What is the state doing then? I saw many things over two months. You say one thing in the Supreme Court and another in the High Court. Panel advocates are more powerful than the officers. Spending only Rs 45 lakh is not enough. There is such a large complex in Salt Lake. Why aren't tents being set up there to relocate the CISF?" he questioned.
Directing the state to inform the court about alternative arrangements, Justice Rao set the next hearing on Feb 12.
