  • Kolkata: A property dispute in Beleghata escalated into violence, leaving a resident seriously injured and triggering fresh clashes in the area. Sukamal Debnath was severely injured after being allegedly assaulted by a local developer, Raju Naskar, and his associates on Wednesday afternoon, a police officer said.

A fresh round of clash took place on Sunday. On Feb 5, Debnath, who also alleged of being wrongfully restrained outside a popular restaurant on Beleghata Main Road opposite Siddheswari Market around 1 pm, was taken to Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. On Sunday, the local tenants, mostly women, accused Debnath of indulging in violence and threatening them. In both cases, written complaints were lodged. While locals claimed a bomb was used in the previous attack, the cops denied such claims, stating no FIR stated the same.

"The victim (Debnath) refused to vacate a local property. However, the opposite side claimed that he accepted money initially to vacate but then backed out. These conflicting claims led to the incidents," said a local police source. In the first complaint, Debnath had named Naskar and six of his alleged aides.
