  • Kolkata: Marking a win in a long-drawn battle against trauma, the Durgapur medical college student who survived a gang rape outside the campus last year, rejoined the institute on Monday, college authorities confirmed. Special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee, defence lawyer Shekhar Kundu and the survivor's counsel Partha Ghosh said she wanted to begin anew and they were hopeful that truth would prevail. Sources said special attention was given to her security.

Sources also said the survivor had taken her first MBBS professional exams, which she missed last Oct owing to the trauma following the ordeal. College authorities, however, have not confirmed it.

While the survivor's father had expressed a desire to move his daughter to her home state, Odisha, college authorities were keen that she finished her studies and offered to provide all necessary support. "She is a bright student and is keen to become a doctor. We want her to graduate from here," the director of the medical college said at the time.

During the recording of her statement before the magistrate, the student indicated that she wished to continue her medical studies.

Police arrested five men from Bijra area within 48 hours of the crime and filed an 861-page charge sheet. Last week, the survivor completed the cross-questioning about her ordeal. Her disposition was completed in late Jan. "The survivor completed all legal formalities that are required to make this a watertight case. She showed extreme courage," said Chatterjee.
