  • Kolkata: Former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, Akhtar Ali, was sent to judicial custody till Feb 17, after a special CBI court at Alipore rejected his bail plea. Ali surrendered before the court following a court order.

Last week, a special CBI court issued a non-bailable warrant against Ali after he failed to appear before the court. Sources close to the development said that Ali skipped five summons. His lawyers argued that he had an accident and was hospitalised with a spinal injury.

Ali, who claimed to be under treatment at a hospital, reached the court on Saturday to surrender. However, that process could not be completed on Saturday within the stipulated time. While entering the court on Saturday, Ali claimed that the allegations against him were baseless and that he took a loan for his brother's treatment. He also alleged that he was being framed and accused former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh of conspiracy. He also claimed that he would accept the fact if he was arrested.

"When CBI officials questioned me about my bank accounts, I made a childish mistake by not telling them that I borrowed some money for my brother's treatment," Ali said on Tuesday.
