  • Kolkata: A 62-year-old New Town resident was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.6 lakh by fraudsters after her cellphone was compromised through a fraudulent credit card advertisement link on social media, police said.

The victim lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station on Monday stating that the incident occurred on Oct 29, 2025. Police said that immediately after clicking the link, her phone was allegedly hacked. The device could not be switched off and call-forwarding was automatically activated, enabling the fraudsters to gain unauthorised access to her bank accounts. Taking advantage of the compromised device, the accused allegedly siphoned off a total amount of Rs 1,58,450 from multiple bank accounts belonging to the victim.

The victim later realised that she had been cheated and reported the matter on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Based on her complaint, cops registered a case under sections 316(2), 319(2), 318(4), 61(2), 111(4) and 111(6) of BNS.
