Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to actor and BJP MLA Hiranmoy Chattopadhyaya in a complaint filed by his wife for allegedly "illegally" getting married for a second time.
Justice Jay Sengupta, however, directed him to appear before the investigating officer of Anandapur police station once every 15 days. Chattopadhyaya's wife filed a complaint against him on January 22, 2026.
She accused Hiranmoy of "illegally" marrying Ritika Giri, causing mental and physical torture to her. Hiranmoy was BJP MLA for Kharagpur Sadar since 2021.
She claimed that she came to know of the second marriage through his social media handles. An FIR was filed against Hiranmoy under sections 82(1) (marrying again during the lifetime of a spouse, punishable by up to 7 years in prison, a fine, or both) and 85 (cruelty committed by a woman's husband or his relatives) of BNS.
