  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police registered a theft case against a house help, after a gold necklace worth Rs 20 lakh, was allegedly stolen from a trader's residence at South City Garden complex on BL Saha Road in Behala.

The FIR named her as the accused, alleging she stopped reporting to work since Tuesday. A probe is on to locate her. The case comes amid a rise in theft complaints in which domestic staff and caregivers are suspected, according to an analysis by the detective department. The study found that about 31% of recent theft cases involved servants and caregivers, the sources said.

Police said 104 thefts were reported across Kolkata in Dec, 2025 and Jan, 2026 and 32 of those cases involved maids, servants or caregivers. Officers cited recent cases to stress the importance of verification of domestic workers. tnn
