• Bidhannagar Police to have more cams, cops on VIP Rd, Biswa Bangla Sarani for smooth traffic

  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Police, led by commissioner Murlidhar Sharma, will add automatic number plate recognition cameras and speed cameras on VIP Road and Biswa Bangla Sarani in the next six months. All senior police officers, including ICs of traffic guards, ACPs and DCPs, will be present on roads every day during peak traffic hours—9 am to 11 am and again, 6 pm to 8.30 pm.

    These decisions were taken at a meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Sharma and attended by all key traffic wing officers. "Compared to Kolkata Police areas, infrastructure in lacking on important roads, like VIP Road and Biswa Bangla Sarani, where we are installing tech tools," said an officer.

    Bidhannagar Police is studying the signal cycles at some traffic-heavy crossings, such as Chingrighata and Haldiram. "We are considering making the Salt Lake service road, which runs along the canal, parallel to Salt Lake Bypass one-way," said an officer. "Almost 1,000 buses enter Salt Lake every day. We need their feedback. We will also talk to auto unions and app-based food delivery platforms to find ways to decongest roads."
