  • Krishnanagar: In a significant turn in the controversy surrounding Amir Chand Sheikh's donation of his mother's eyes following her death, a local court in Nadia granted bail to Sheikh and four others of his family on Thursday.

The judicial magistrate (fifth court) granted bail to the accused on a bond of Rs 2,000 each after the complainant, Amir Chand's brother Rashid Sheikh, told the court that the case had stemmed from a "misunderstanding".

Court sources said Rashid admitted that he had filed the complaint in a moment of emotional distress following their mother's death but later realised there was confusion surrounding the circumstances of the eye donation and expressed regret.

"I have no objection to Amir Sheikh being granted bail," he told the court. The prosecution did not oppose the bail plea.

Defence counsel said all documents related to the eye donation were placed before the court. The next hearing has been scheduled for May 26, counsel added.B
