Kolkata: The decomposed body of a 65-year-old man living alone in Salt Lake was recovered from his residence on Thursday morning after neighbours alerted police about his absence since Tuesday and a foul smell emanating from the house.
Police identified the deceased as Tapas Roy, a retired employee of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies in Salt Lake. Roy was divorced and lived alone at his GD Block residence. His former wife lives in Jharkhand, while their only daughter is married and works in Delhi.
Police said, Roy's body was found inside the bathroom in a pool of blood. A preliminary investigation suggests he may have slipped and sustained a fatal injury after losing his balance. The body was sent for a post-mortem
Neighbours said Roy was last seen on Tuesday morning. An elderly resident of the locality said Roy usually informed neighbours if he planned to visit relatives, but there was no such communication this time. "We noticed a strong stench coming from the house on Thursday. I tried calling him several times, but the phone kept ringing," the neighbour said.
Police said the house was locked from inside, and cops broke open the door to enter the premises.
