  • Kolkata: A 30-year-old woman from Shibpur, a doctor, alleged that an app-bike rider abused and intimidated her, and later sent vulgar messages after she refused to pay Rs 20 more than the fare shown on the app. The complainant said the incident occurred around 6.30 pm on Feb 7, after she was dropped off in Mominpore.

The complaint said the rider, Md Qurassi alias Shabaaz Alam, received the trip fare through online payment. The woman alleged he then demanded more and abused her when she refused. The doctor said after the argument, the rider drove the bike in a rash and negligent manner, striking her bag and hitting her feet while leaving. She said a short while later, the rider sent messages to her phone containing "grave, insulting and vulgar language" directed at her and her mother. Cops have registered a case.

The woman said she took app-bikes often but had never came across such harassment. "The biker often requests extra money. But that is done in a polite tone. In this case, he acted as if he was being denied his rightful share," she told cops.
