Kolkata: A septuagenarian medical shop owner in Howrah was granted bail by Calcutta HC in an NDPS case for allegedly storing 156.8 litres of codeine-mixed cough syrup, stating that the state could not show any ceiling limit for a medicine shop to store any quantity of cough syrup such as phensedyl. The single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh noted the state was unable to produce any document showing that the owner was not carrying out business under a valid licence.
The 73-year-old moved court seeking bail, stating he was "illegally detained". He was arrested in April 2025 and it was alleged that he could not produce papers supporting the same on demand. tnn
