  • Kolkata: A 44-year-old man residing at a complex close to Garia station, Swarup Dey, and his 40-year-old wife were reportedly assaulted near the Park Street–Mullickbazar crossing on Sunday after he and his wife became involved in a drunken brawl while out for a late-night meal.

According to the complainant, the victim's wife, the incident occurred around 4.30 am when the couple reached 17, Park Street. She said a group of men started an argument and then wrongfully restrained her husband, threatened him, and pushed him to the ground. The fall caused a cut on his head. He was then allegedly assaulted.

The complainant also alleged that she was physically assaulted and sustained injuries when she tried to intervene.

Police said Dey was first taken to Bellevue Clinic, where he received preliminary treatment and was discharged. He was later taken to Peerless Hospital for further treatment. A case was registered.

An officer said the victim did not know the assailants. "We are scanning CCTV footage for leads. We are not certain what prompted the brawl and whether there was anything to do with the passing of objectionable comments. The woman's statement will be officially taken in front of a magistrate," the officer said.

Officers said they are trying to establish if the altercation began inside an eating outlet, or on the street, and whether alcohol consumption by anyone contributed to the escalation. No arrest was reported as of Tuesday.
