  • Kolkata: A 51-year-old security guard trying to open the gate at a Alipore complex was crushed against the wall of the guard room on Thursday morning after the building owner's car abruptly sped up instead of slowing down. The incident occurred around 11.20 am on the premises of Alipore Height on Judges Court Road. The deceased was identified as Govinda Kayal (51) from Ananda Abasan on Garia Station Road. The EV involved was a private car with the registration number WB01 BD1497.

"Kayal saw the car coming and went to open the gate. The driver may not have been used to the new car. Instead of braking, he accelerated. The car slammed into Kayal and pinned him to the guard room 5m inside. Kayal died on the spot. The driver got out of the car as others rushed in, but he did not run. He showed no emotion when cops came, despite him sharing a cordial relationship with Kayal," a driver said.

Kayal was taken to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. There were multiple injuries, mostly on the upper portion of the body, indicating severe trauma. Kayal was employed at the building for close to a decade. The body was sent for medico-legal procedures, and the family was notified, officers said.

Alipore cops took charge of the car and the driver, Maheswar Thakur (61), who was arrested. Thakur was returning after dropping the car owner, Rajendra Gupta, at his office.

Police sealed the complex gate and called forensic experts. The car will be tested to determine whether it was roadworthy or had developed any mechanical fault.

Cops may examine the circumstances under which the car entered the complex, including the speed, visibility at the point, and the position of the guard at the time of impact. Investigators may also review available CCTV footage from the complex and nearby cameras.
