Kolkata: Jadavpur University on Tuesday debarred three current students from entering the campus for at least two weeks, during which time, they will not be allowed to even appear for their exams.
The university implemented the prohibition on UG economics student Asmil Abdul Majeed, PG international relations student Jahit Rahaman Ali Khan and UG philosophy student Rohan Ball for being involved in the campus violence, in which two professors were assaulted.
A former student of the film studies department, Sagnik Saha, has also been debarred from entering the campus until further order.
"The four appeared to have been involved in the incident, in which two professors were assaulted on Friday. The VC has debarred the three current students from all institutional activities, including attending classes and appearing for exams, for at least two weeks. If they violate the prohibition, disciplinary action will be taken," said a senior official. "The ex-student is prohibited from entering the campus until further order, failing which, legal action will be initiated."
TOI tried to reach Khan, Majeed and Saha but they did not respond.Ball said, "I have not yet received the letter, so cannot comment on it."
The incident started on Friday with a fight between students' groups on the campus. Several teachers stepped in. "Even as the teachers calmed them down, a few other students—among them the debarred four—appeared. They barged into the crowd, hurled abuses and assaulted people. One of their blows landed on professor Rajyeswar Sinha. Professor Lalit Lalitav Mohakud was also injured in the melee," said a witness.
A guard said, "Those debarred are very aggressive. They often harass us if we try to stop them from unlawful activities on the campus."
JUTA on Monday wrote to VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, demanding action by Tuesday. JU formed an inquiry committee with three external members, the pro-VC and the deputy registrar and requested submissions of depositions in sealed envelopes by Feb 27. The university on Monday introduced new rules, such as banning gatherings on the campus after 8 pm, legal action against those disobeying the rule without a valid reason, and disciplinary action against any misconduct, intimidation, or disrespectful behaviour towards security personnel.
