Kolkata: Three persons, identified as Sayan Das, Asad Mohammad Punjabi and Firoz Khan, were arrested on Tuesday after Park Street police recovered $4,75,000 and 300,000 Thai baht from their possession without valid documentation. The SUV they were travelling in was detained. All three reportedly live in Mumbai.
"On Tuesday night, Park Street police noticed three men loitering suspiciously. The officers questioned them and then checked their bags. They found stacks of dollars and baht, totalling Rs 4 crore in Indian currency," said an officer.
When asked about the source of the money, the trio claimed they worked at a currency exchange office and were taking the money to Mumbai. When the police officers asked for documents, they failed to furnish them. The cops are focusing on transactions linked to multiple accounts. "We will not reveal the source or destination as we need to investigate the final destination," said DC (South) Dipak Sarkar.
