• ‘Tracking device snags delayed CF for public transport vehicles’
    Times of India | 27 February 2026
  • Kolkata: In a petition submitted before the state transport department, transport operators on Thursday sought govt intervention, claiming that glitches in the vehicle location tracking device system in the state has delayed the issuance of mandatory fitness certificates (CF) to thousands of public transport vehicles in Bengal. They urged the govt not to make VLTD fitment or recharge mandatory at the time of CF issuance. The CF cannot be issued unless the VLTD system for a vehicle gets clearance, according to the existing rules. According to the Joint Forum of Transport Operator, there has been a lack of clarity over VLTD fitment and recharge over the past couple of years.

The forum said the fitment of VLTD devices was put on hold for many vehicles during this period. But the operators were now informed through official notices that VLTD fitment and recharge would again be treated as must for CF. The petitioners said they were not informed about the outcome of earlier technical failures or the current status. Transporters said until a uniform recharge procedure was finalised CF issuance and permit renewals should not be withheld. tnn
