• Another ragging plaint on JU campus

  • Kolkata: A second-year student from Jadavpur University's comparative literature department lodged a complaint with the dean of students on Feb 18, alleging that his department seniors mentally harassed and bullied him, and threatened to thrash him. The complainant also alleged that, in a previous incident, he and his friends received a threat from a former student. All of them are SFI members, he said in the letter.

According to the complaint, on the evening of Feb 13, while he and his friends sat on the ground floor of the UG Arts building around 7 pm, a group comprising his classmates and two PG first-year students gathered opposite the place and made derogatory remarks. The complainant said that "things started to get worse" for him when one of the seniors threatened him with "mob lynching".

He alleged this incident is not isolated. He and his friends have long been targeted by a former student, who is an SFI leader on campus. The complainant alleged they were pressured to join the organisation's rallies and were threatened with having their careers ruined through the department head if they disobeyed. "I missed classes for a month as I felt scared to enter campus... I even visited psychologists and therapists as my mental health is worsening," he wrote.

VC Chiranjib Bhattacharya siad, "A complaint was received. Necessary action will be taken according to the law in such cases."
