KOLKATA: A 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted an elderly couple inside a crowded bus in Behala following a dispute over a seat reserved for senior citizens.
The incident occurred around 9.30 pm on Monday on a bus plying on route 18A (Howrah-Greenfield City) along Diamond Harbour Road. The bus was heading towards Greenfield City and was less than a kilometre from Taratala when the altercation broke out.
Chittaranjan Naskar (64), a resident of Gangadharpur in Maheshtala, alleged that copassenger Dhurba Sinha of Shyam Sundar Pally in Parnashree started the argument over the senior citizen seat. The dispute intensified near Pathakpara, close to Behala PS, and soon turned violent.
Cops said Sinha allegedly punched Naskar’s wife, Durga Mondal, on the forehead, causing her to lose consciousness briefly. When Naskar protested, he too was assaulted. Both suffered bleeding injuries, allegedly caused by rings worn by the accused.
Passengers raised an alarm and the bus was stopped. The injured couple were taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital and later discharged, said DC (Behala-SW) Rahul De.
Following Naskar’s complaint, Behala police arrested Sinha and registered a case of assault. He was granted conditional bail by a local court on Tuesday.
