Kolkata: During road repair works in Dum Dum, North Dum Dum and Nimta-Birati areas, several trees and saplings were allegedly uprooted, while concrete structures were built around the bases of some others. In response, green activists launched a movement demanding the immediate removal of these concrete bases and the replantation of saplings along the affected roads.
"During repairs, the workers paid little attention to protecting the trees along the roads. Despite our repeated appeals, several trees were chopped, saplings were uprooted, and concrete bases built around the trees restricted the roots' access to water and air," said Suman Adhikary, a resident of Motijheel.
The activists began a campaign in contravention of NGT guidelines and a subsequent order from the Calcutta HC.
