Kolkata: The city experienced a poll-like atmosphere on Monday during the West Bengal Bar Council election. Candidates included Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb, ex-MP Subhashis Chakraborty, and KMC MMiC Baiswanar Chatterjee. Deb, the MLA for Budge Budge, served as the council chairman.
Polling began at 10 am on Monday and will continue through Tuesday. Three booths have been set up at the high court for over 10,000 advocates. The previous election was held in 2021. Following an SC directive to complete bar council elections by late April, a committee including Justice (retd) Ashim Kumar Roy, Justice (retd) D Krishna Kumar, and Advocate General Kishore Dutta was formed to monitor the process. "The process was peaceful. State election commission ballot boxes were used, sealed in the treasury, and video recorded for transparency," he said. tnn
