  • KOLKATA: A 50-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself at her home in Baduria, North 24 Parganas, on Monday. Her family claimed she had been distressed over uncertainty surrounding her and her sons' names in the first final voter list under the SIR process.

The deceased, Rinarani Kundu, was a resident of West Chandipur village under Basirhat subdivision. Family members and local sources said she had been under severe mental stress for several days after the draft electoral roll was published.

Her name allegedly carried the remark "under adjudication", while the names of her two sons, Shubadeep Kundu and Soumen Kundu, were deleted from the first final list.

The family, long-time residents of the area, said they possessed all the necessary documents. Sources said that on Monday morning the two sons went to the Baduria BDO office to submit Form 6 with relevant documents to restore their names in the electoral roll.

While they were there, they received a phone call informing them that their mother had been found hanging at home. The brothers rushed back and took her to Baduria Rudrapur Rural Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

"Our names were deleted in the SIR process and beside my mother's name it was written ‘under adjudication'. While we were on our way to submit Form 6, we received the news that she hanged herself. She was extremely worried about the issue," Shubadeep said. Police sent the body for post-mortem examination. "We already initiated an unnatural death case in this connection. An investigation is on," a senior official of Basirhat district police said.
