  • Kolkata/Howrah: There was chaos on the busy Foreshore Road when temporary workers from the civil defence and disaster management forces tried to march towards Nabanna on Tuesday and clashed with police after demanding permanent jobs.

Things turned more dramatic after the protesters tried to move towards Esplanade, the spot where CM Mamata Banerjee is sitting on a protest on the SIR issue, seeking to meet her after being stopped by cops. The Howrah Police then detained 64 protesters from the spot.

Protesters said they wanted to submit their demands and sough ta meeting with the CM in Esplanade. Police did not allow the group to proceed towards Nabanna, according to officers at the site. The standoff then turned into a confrontation as protesters tried to move past the barricades.

After being stopped on the road to Nabanna, some protesters said they would go to Dharmatala and try to meet the CM at her protest stage there. Police blocked that move as well, leading to another round of confrontation and detentions.
