• Salt Lake resident in cop net for 2 crore property fraud

  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police has arrested a Salt Lake resident, Vishnu Kumar Agarwal, in connection with an alleged property fraud and extortion case worth Rs 2.3 crore reportedly linked to a redevelopment project at 65, Bentinck Street, joint CP (crime) Rupesh Kumar said on Monday.

    The arrest was made at the accused's Salt Lake on Wednesday. The case was earlier indexed on Feb 16 this year, registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including charges related to cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, extortion and use of forged documents.

    The accused allegedly conspired in a scheme involving the disputed property after entering into a development agreement and executing a power of attorney with the complainant whoinvested more than Rs 35 lakh toward relocation of tenants and obtaining municipal clearances required for the project. The accused allegedly induced the complainant's associate to pay further Rs 2 crore for the remaining share of the property. Investigators said the payment was made against title deeds and related security documents that were later found to be forged. Agarwal's lawyers have denied all allegations.
