  • Howrah: A couple was arrested on Friday for the murder of the man's 62-year-old mother in Fatikgachhi, Jagatballavpur. The woman's body was found inside a sack lying by the road on Thursday evening.

The victim was identified as Sushama Denre. During interrogation, her son Shubhankar (36) confessed he had been fed up with her charitable work that was putting a strain on the family's financial resources. He told cops that he had repeatedly asked Sushama to cut down on expenses, but she did not listen. He also said that when his new wife Papiya (37) also requested the same, Sushama began to mistreat her.

Sushama fed beggars and provided them with medical and other help. After Shubhankar stopped giving her money, she sold her jewellery to continue the charitable work.

Shubhankar told cops he and Papiya planned and executed the murder. He restrained Sushama's hands and feet while Papiya strangled her. He then put the body in a sack and dumped it in the bushes by a deserted road. Howrah Rural Police's additional SP Santosh Mondal said, "Based on the confession of the son and his wife, and CCTV footage, both were arrested. They were presented in Howrah Court. Subhankar was taken into police custody, Papiya was sent to jail custody."

Shubhankar works as a senior executive at a multinational company in Salt Lake, and Papiya is from New Town.
