Kolkata: Pradesh Congress on Sunday said that the Election Commission will snatch the right of the people to vote and contest the polls if the final supplementary list is not out before the elections. Congress leaders, who spoke to lawyers on Sunday night to seek legal opinion, apprehended further legal complications after the ECI's announced the poll dates.
"The ECI had said that supplementary lists will be published as per the court order. What happens to those who still remain adjudicated till the last supplementary list before the polls is out? Who will guarantee that there will not be any genuine voter who is an aspirant candidate?" PCC president Subhankar Sarkar said on Sunday. In Nov last year, Pradesh Congress moved the apex court seeking relief against the ongoing SIR.
Sarkar also said that last-moment additions to the supplementary list will virtually close the avenues to appeal against any discrepancies. "The Supreme Court has to step in now to ensure a free, fair and fearless election in Bengal. The adjudicated cases have to get resolved before the polls, and the Supreme Court is overseeing the issue now."
