  • Kolkata: The income tax department, which has set up 24×7 control rooms and check posts in Bengal, has seized Rs 1 crore unaccounted-for money in the first four days of its operation. I-T officials suspect the money was meant to be used during the 2026 assembly polls.

An IT official said the largest haul was of Rs 30 lakh, seized by RPF from a person in Howrah this week. The next big seizure came on Friday, when a bike pillion rider was found with Rs 25 lakh in New Town. "We have seen unaccounted-for cash seized before and during polls is used during the election," said an I-T official. —Rohit Khanna
