A Trinamul Congress (TMC) worker was shot dead in south Kolkata late Wednesday night, triggering panic in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Dey.
The incident took place around midnight in the Purba Phulbagan under Baghajatin police station area.
The incident came to the fore when local residents heard at least three rounds of firing were fired from the rooftop of a residential building.
People rushed to the roof to find Rahul Dey lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.
Another youth, identified as Jeet Mukhopadhyay, sustained serious injuries. He is in hospital undergoing treatment.
On receiving information, a large contingent of police from Patuli police station rushed to the spot. Officials from the Lalbazar homicide department also arrived and initiated an investigation.
Police sources said Rahul had gone to Jeet Mukhopadhyay’s flat earlier that night after reportedly being called by him.
Residents claimed that shortly after 12.30 a.m. multiple gunshots were heard from the rooftop, spreading fear across the locality.
Investigators have begun questioning local residents and are examining CCTV footage from the area to piece together the sequence of events.
Jeet Mukhopadhyay’s wife has also been questioned.
She reportedly told police that several unidentified individuals entered their flat late at night and opened fire indiscriminately. She claimed she did not recognise any of the assailants.
The statement has raised further questions for the investigators.
Police have also learned that Rahul and Jeet had not been in contact for a long time, making the circumstances under which Rahul was called to the flat particularly suspicious.
Meanwhile, two known individuals have been detained and are being interrogated in connection with the case.
Police are probing all possible angles to ascertain the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.
