The Trinamul Congress candidate from Uttarpara Assembly constituency, Sirsanya Banerjee, has already begun campaigning in his constituency. However, he finds himself in a predicament as his name has not appeared in the Election Commission of India’s supplementary voter list. Speculation is rife in political circles over how he will file his nomination papers if his name is ultimately not included. Sirsanya has expressed deep concern over the issue.
Sirsanya’s father, Kalyan Banerjee, is the Trinamul MP from the Sreerampur Lok Sabha constituency, under which the Uttarpara Assembly segment falls. The Trinamul Congress has alleged various irregularities and lapses in the electoral process, and advocate Kalyan Banerjee is currently pursuing a legal challenge on the party’s behalf. Sirsanya, also an advocate by profession, has criticised both the BJP and the Election Commission of India over the omission of his name from the voter list.
Sirsanya said: “Like thousands of others in Bengal, my name is currently listed as ‘under consideration’. Naturally, this is a matter of concern. I have been casting my vote in the Bhawanipore Assembly constituency since 2005. How, then, can my name still be listed as ‘under consideration’?”
He, however, remains hopeful that his name will be included before the deadline for filing nominations. He added, “If this situation continues, we will be forced to take to the streets in protest against the ECI. Alternatively, we will have to seek legal recourse.”
Pankaj Roy, a member of BJP’s Serampore district committee, said, “SIR is a defined constitutional process. If there are issues with documentation, there are provisions to address them. Simply making allegations against the BJP without following due procedure will not yield any constructive outcome.”
An official from the Hooghly district administration said: “For those whose names are currently listed as ‘under consideration’, inclusion in the voter list is being processed following administrative verification, provided there are no discrepancies in the submitted documents. In such cases, one must wait for the process to be completed, as per established protocol.”
