  • Kolkata: Two days after Rahul Dey was shot dead on the terrace of an apartment at Baghajatin, cops believe that sharp shooter, Sukumar Rajak, had got the weapon from Sonarpur.

He might have contacted a local criminal, cops claim. Rajak was absconding till the time of filing of the report.

In the incident, Dey's friend Jeet Mukherjee was also injured. Cops have also confirmed the fifth accused in the case, Akash Mondal alias Mukhia, was detained on Friday. He was arrested later.

"Further in course of investigation on the basis of credible source informations the accused person Akash Mondal, a resident of Sultan Alam Road in Charu Market, was apprehended along with the team of ARS of detective department from Bentinck Street and after interrogation he was detained and arrested on Saturday late night. He was produced in court the same day," said joint CP (crime and traffic) Rupesh Kumar. Police have also sent the bullet that was involved in the shooting and led to Dey's death to experts for their observations.

Police said special teams have been formed to arrest Rajak. He was a hired goon of main accused Jayanta Ghosh. Cops said Ghosh was the main executioner of the crime that took place on Thursday. Cops said the accused has several cases lodged against him.

"Rajak began his criminal activities under a notorious goon from the southern suburbs. The accused shows his links run deep in the criminal world," said a detective department officer.

When four other arrested persons were quizzed, investigators learnt that their leader, Ghosh, had accompanied the shooter. But Rajak was asked to execute the crime without him.

It has been revealed in the probe that Rajak had joined a gang in the southern suburbs in the '90s. Thereafter, he turned out to be the main shooter, linked to crimes in Tollygunge, Regent Park, Sonarpur, Narendrapur and Baruipur.

Sources claimed he was also involved with a group that threatened people for ransom.

"He and his mentor were arrested for murder earlier. They were in Presidency Correctional Home. He was suspected to have helped Myanmar's drug kingpin," a source said.
