  • Kolkata: A man from Kasba, Binod Singh (45), stabbed his wife while she was asleep, in front of their 16-year-old daughter on Sunday morning. This happened after she denied to pay Rs 4,000 for his gambling and drinking addiction. Singh was caught by locals while he tried to flee and was arrested following a complaint lodged by the daughter.

The incident occurred around 4 am at Bosepukur Road in Kasba when the victim, Swapna Singh (42), was asleep. According to the daughter's complaint, the accused returned home at that hour after an earlier altercation and allegedly stabbed his wife multiple times with a kitchen knife.

Swapna sustained several stab wounds to her abdomen. Neighbours rushed her to Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital around 5.30 am, where she later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Police said they were alerted by the hospital at around 6.30 am and immediately reached the spot. By then, locals had already apprehended Singh and handed him over to the police. He was subsequently arrested on charges of murder based on the complaint lodged by the couple's daughter.

Investigators said Singh, a grill factory worker, frequently quarrelled with his wife over money and also suspected her of having an extramarital affair. Swapna worked as a domestic help in multiple households, and police said Singh often stalked her on her way to work and created disturbances at her workplaces.

"On Saturday night, Singh demanded Rs 4,000 from his wife, which she refused. This led to an argument. Neighbours intervened as a shradh ceremony was underway next door. Swapna eventually forced him out of the house and shut the door after he left. However, he returned early in the morning and carried out the fatal attack," a senior Kolkata Police officer said.

According to the daughter's statement, the accused kept knocking on the door early in the morning until she opened it, while Swapna was still asleep inside. "The daughter has stated that the man attacked her with a knife without any provocation," the officer added.

A relative of the deceased said Swapna was the primary breadwinner of the family and that Singh's repeated interference at her workplace had earlier caused her to lose jobs on multiple occasions. Despite this, he allegedly continued to harass her and demand money.

The couple had three daughters – two of them were married and lived with their husbands, while the youngest of them all lived with the parents and was a witness to the horrific scene.

Residents said they rushed to the house after hearing screams, managed to overpower the accused as he tried to flee, and arranged for the victim to be taken to hospital. "She had already lost a lot of blood on her way to the hospital. Doctors were treating her at the emergency ward when she passed away," said the relative.
