  • Purulia: "I have returned from the brink of death," CM Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday, countering Union home minister Amit Shah's "victim card" charge. She was addressing a rally in Purulia's Manbazar.

"They (BJP) say that I roamed around with bandages. I have fought death many times. Why don't they go and check medical reports? Don't you have any shame? Do you not know the torture I have been through?" the CM said at an election rally in Purulia. She added, "Even during the previous election, you hurt my leg. Despite that, I travelled around in a wheelchair with a cast on because I am strong from within. I knew I had to stand beside my people no matter what."

While releasing a political "charge sheet" against the Trinamool-led govt on Saturday, Shah said that Banerjee "had always played the politics of the victim card".

The CM said, "Are they planning to kill me now? Their words are proof that they are hatching a conspiracy... but they will do well to remember that unless God wills it, nobody can do anything."

Speaking on the charge sheet, Banerjee added: "A big neta came from Delhi yesterday and filed a charge sheet against TMC. Who are you to file a charge sheet? You should be charge-sheeted."

She also targeted the Union home minister, while referring to the deportation of Indians from the US last year. "Where were you when Gujaratis were being pushed back from America with ropes around their waists," she asked.

Asserting that she was the candidate in all 294 seats, Banerjee urged voters to place their trust in her leadership. "You don't have to look at who the candidate is. I am the candidate. Place your trust in me and cast your vote. Trinamool will form govt no matter how many conspiracies are hatched," Banerjee said.

Addressing a rally in Purulia district's Manbazar, the CM listed her govt's welfare initiatives and told the gathering that BJP would discontinue Lakshmir Bhandar and put restrictions on people's dietary preferences if it comes to office following the polls. She also promised pucca houses for everyone in Bengal.

Alleging that BJP netas were not true followes of any religion, Banerjee said, "These people incite riots. They come to office by inciting riots, they come to office by killing people... Adivasis (tribals) are attacked in BJP-governed states. Bengali-speaking people are attacked in BJP-governed states. But here in Bengal, we do not oppress anyone," she said.

"They accuse us of changing Bengal's demography, in 2002 to 2011. Do they not have any sense? Were we in office in 2002? We came to office in May 2011," Banerjee added.
