  • Kolkata: There was tension in the Jamunanagar area of east Jadavpur after two groups clashed with one another, following a protest lodged by a youth about the negligent and dangerous manner in which a neighbour hailing from the same area was riding his bike. The incident led to wide scale brickbatting and vandalism though cops denied any weapons being used.

The locals alleged that at least seven persons were injured in the incident even as cops have arrested four persons so far.

Besides Kolkata Police personnel, central forces have been deputed in the area to ensure peace in the area. A case of attempt to murder has been registered at the East Jadavpur PS under attempt to murder and additional sections of the Arms Act.

According to locals and cops, the incident began around 8 pm on Sunday when a local, Rabi Naskar, protested over Ankit Jaiswal riding the bike in a reckless manner. This reportedly angered Ankit who called up several of his friends who assaulted Naskar. They also reportedly tried to set him on fire, alleged Naskar. The police denied there was any such attempt though he was assaulted.

Locals said that on seeing Naskar's condition, they decided to lodge a strong complaint. A few locals went to Ankit's residence and demanded an answer. They asked him to come out and apologize.

The locals said this time Ankit yet again dialed his friends and asked for help. Over two dozen men turned up in bikes, armed with brickbats, rods and steel pipes. The accused reportedly assaulted the protesters outside Ankit's residence and even vandalized a couple of shops and two-wheelers.

"Four men, Ankit Jaiswal (19) of Jamunanagar; Himansu Kumar (19) of Khudirabad; Sagar Balmiki (26) of Jamunanagar; and Aman Shaw (24), of Adarsha Nagar, have been arrested. The case was registered on the complaint of Naren Das (35), a resident of Jamunanagar under East Jadavpur PS. All four will be produced before the ACJM Court in Alipore seeking police remand. Raids are on to trace the remaining accused," said joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar.
