• ‘Irresponsible remark’: MP Mahua Moitra’s comments on 'Gujaratis' spark row in Mamata Banerjee's fief; TMC apologises

  • KOLKATA: A controversy over remarks by Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra on the Gujarati community has triggered unease within the party. The issue has gained traction in Bhowanipore, a politically sensitive segment with a mixed population, where CM Mamata Banerjee is contesting. Members of the Gujarati community have reacted angrily to Moitra's comments.

BJP senior netas, including CM's opponent Suvendu Adhikari, circulated the clip on social media.

The backlash has been sharp in Ward 70, where over 35% of residents are Gujarati. Local TMC councillor Ashim Basu issued a video statement, distancing the party from Moitra's remarks. Basu read out a WhatsApp message from the CM: "I personally apologise to my Gujarati brothers and sisters. I am proud of you all. Please be rest assured we will not allow this and we have already communicated it to the concerned MP. We do not endorse this comment. I apologise for such an irresponsible remark," Basu read from his phone.

"Didi and I feel that you are part and parcel of our own family. The remarks were disappointing for us also. The MP didn't consult the party while making the statement and it is not our party's stance. We apologise again. Please don't misunderstand us for this stray comment," he added.

"Our party supremo was very upset and immediately decided to apologise to Gujarati community. I heaved a sigh of relief when our party chief sent a strong message to the Gujarati community that our party values their sentiments and would always stand by them," Basu said.

Moitra on Saturday had said: "Bengalis led the war for independence. Who were the Gujaratis? ... 68% of the people who were killed and incarcerated in Kala Pani were Bengalis, followed by Punjabis. Can you name me one Gujarati who was there, apart from your big hero, Veer Savarkar, who only wanted to sit and write apology letters? Please let us know."
