An NIA team arrived at Mothabari in Malda on Friday to investigate the recent incident. The investigating officers first reached Mothabari police station in the afternoon and later proceeded to the BDO office at Mothabari.
It may be noted that on Wednesday, tension escalated in Mothabari following protests over the demand to protect voting rights. Voters whose names were allegedly deleted from the electoral rolls staged a road blockade throughout the day. The agitation intensified at night, with protesters ‘gheraoing’ the Kaliachak-II BDO office for several hours.
During the protest, seven judicial officers were confined inside the premises and faced severe disruption. Later in the night, police managed to rescue them amid heightened tension.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India to initiate a probe either by the CBI or the NIA. Acting on the directive, the Election Commission handed over the investigation to the NIA, whose officials reached Mothabari on Friday afternoon to begin their inquiry.
