  • Trinamul Congress today held a press conference highlighting that BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari is acting in desperation, fearing a defeat in both Nandigram and Bhowanipore. They also showed how goons close to Suvendu are intimidating people.

Minister Dr. Shashi Panja said that the Calcutta High Court has been providing a security blanket to Suvendu Adhikari, and now he seems to think that his aides will also receive this protection and can do whatever they want.

The incident of hooliganism she was referring to allegedly took place in Nandigram Block 1, in East Midnapore. “Hooliganism is a characteristic trait of the BJP. Suvendu Adhikari’s aides have engaged in hooliganism against common people, and this has now come to light. Another previous incident- the murder of an Trinamul Congress worker by BJP workers had also come to light from Nandigram. The BJP is resorting to the politics of murder and violence ahead of the elections because they are feeling insecure. We demand that arrests be made in this matter,” Dr Panja.

Kunal Ghosh said that Suvendu and his aides can sense their impending defeat in Nandigram, and hence they have become desperate. “Yesterday, we received news of the murder of our worker, Foring Das, after BJP workers issued threats against his life. We have now received a video, which is related to Ashok Karan, who is BJP’s Tamluk organisational district vice president and the right-hand man of Suvendu Adhikari. A local resident had been facing obstruction regarding the construction of his house, for which he approached the court and received an order permitting him to proceed. BJP workers attempted to stop the construction,” said Ghosh.

Mr Ghosh said that Suvendu will lose from Nandigram and also from Bhabanipur, by a margin of at least 50,000 votes. “The rally in Bhowanipore was attended by 211 people from the locality. The rest were brought in buses from other districts such as Midnapore. We can provide photographic evidence showing that people were mobilised from outside. If they have to bring people from other districts, it clearly indicates that they are losing there,” he said.
