Kolkata: The EC has turned down ADG CID and former Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar's plea for reprieve from being sent to Tamil Nadu as a police observer on medical grounds. The EC order prompted Sarkar to leave for his assignment on Sunday and submit a compliance report to the commission.
Sarkar became the first ADG — and the first from the CID — to be appointed as a police observer for the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections.
The Election Commission removed Sarkar as the commissioner of Kolkata Police on March 16, within 24 hours of the election declaration.
Sarkar will serve as the police observer for five assembly constituencies — Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Palayamkottai, Nanguneri, and Radhapuram — in Tirunelveli district.
