  • Howrah: Two men were arrested on Sunday night after the Dagar Bagan area under Howrah's Liluah Police Station turned into a battlefield. Bombs were also allegedly hurled.

This happened following a clash between a group publicly celebrating an individual's birthday by barricading a road, playing loud music, dancing, and allegedly drinking on the road, and another group disrupting the celebration by removing the bamboo barricades.

At least five people were injured. Police and Central forces detained seven individuals from both sides.

According to cops, when the protesting men removed the barricades to resume traffic the situation escalated into a violent clash, involving punches and kicks.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a youth brandishing a sword and threatening a woman who tried to intervene. Locals indicate involvement from two factions of TMC, one supporting the outgoing MLA Kalyan Ghosh and the other backing the present candidate Tapas Maiti.

Kalyan Ghosh stated that his followers stopped the disruptive celebration, leading to an attack by the opposing group. Tapas Maiti claimed the celebration was peaceful until outsiders attacked.
