  • Kolkata: A Kolkata Police officer was allegedly assaulted while on duty in the Behala area early Sunday, prompting Lalbazar to issue a fresh directive mandating the use of body cameras during enforcement operations. The incident took place around 1 am on Roy Bahadur Road near Mahabirtala.

Police said a team from Behala Police Station responded to reports of a disturbance involving an allegedly intoxicated individual creating a ruckus. When officers intervened, the accused allegedly hurled abuses at an assistant sub-inspector, before physically attacking him in an attempt to prevent him from carrying out his duties.

The injured officer was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, treated, and later discharged. An FIR has been registered against the accused, and an investigation is underway, including efforts to collect witness accounts and any available digital evidence.

Following the incident, which comes amid a series of recent confrontations between citizens and police, Kolkata Police reiterated the need for strict adherence to operational protocols. In a directive on Monday, all officers have been asked to activate body-worn cameras during field duties and preserve the footage for at least six months to ensure transparency and aid investigations.
