  • KOLKATA: Triumph Motorcycles India is targeting 1 lakh sales of the sub-400 cc bikes manufactured in India in 15 months, down from 30 months it took to sell the first 1 lakh units.

Triumph is the largest UK-owned motorcycle manufacturer, with the lineage of motorcycle production going back to 1902. In 2023, it entered into a non-equity alliance aimed at manufacturing 200cc-750cc motorcycles in India, combining British engineering with Indian manufacturing efficiency.

Speaking to TOI, Manik Nangia, president of Bajaj Auto Ltd-Probiking (Triumph and KTM), said with the launch of its new range of six 350 cc bikes, including the Speed 350, Scrambler 350 X and Thruxton 350, on Monday, the company was set to leverage lower GST tax rates, offer competitive pricing starting below Rs 2 lakh, to record sales at a faster clip.

"When the Triumph brand was relaunched in partnership with Bajaj Auto, there were 13-14 showrooms in the country. Now, there are 230 sales and service outlets spanning almost 200 cities. The touchpoints should increase to 400 by the end of this fiscal," Nangia said.

Bajaj Auto Probiking, that manufactured and distributed Triumph's 400cc bikes, recalibrated the engines of the entire range to 350cc to leverage the lower 18% GST slab for bikes up to 350cc. This has helped the company reduce the price of its bikes by Rs 10,000-21,600 without a significant loss in performance.

The 400 cc bikes are still manufactured at the Chakan plant for the global market. In addition, 660cc to 2,500cc Triumph motorcycles that are imported to India in CBU and CKD form are marketed by Probiking.
