• CU minority colleges seek ‘best-of-4’ relief

  • Kolkata: Several minority colleges affiliated with Calcutta University have formally asked to be exempted from the university's proposed standardised admission index for undergraduate admissions, citing their minority status and existing independent admission procedures.

The university recently proposed introducing a common admission index based on best-of-four marks for UG admissions. The proposal was discussed at a meeting with principals of affiliated colleges last week. Sources said several principals opposed the move, while most minority institutions later communicated their objections directly through written representations.

Among the colleges that have sent letters are Scottish Church College, St. Paul's Cathedral Mission College and Loreto College. In their communications, the institutions reportedly stressed that they are minority colleges, are not part of the central admission portal and already conduct undergraduate admissions under their own systems.

Scottish Church College principal Madhumanjari Mandal said, "We made it clear that we are a minority college. We requested that we be excluded from the change in the process." Scottish Church College sent its letter on Monday. St. Paul's and Loreto College sent similar letters on Tuesday, reiterating their minority status and seeking exclusion from the proposed system. CU VC Asutosh Ghosh said the university received feedback and would hold further meetings.
