  • The Election Commission of India last night released a district-wise break up of voters removed from the “under adjudication” list, revealing that 27,16,393 names have been struck off from a pool of nearly 60 lakh voters taking the cumulative deletion to 90,83,345 as of 7 April.

Earlier, the commission published the first final voter list on 28 February, where as many as 63,66,952 names had been removed.

The addition to this, over 27 lakh deletions from the adjudication list has now taken the cumulative figure close to one crore, raising significant political and administrative attention ahead of the elections.

According to the Commission’s data, Murshidabad recorded the highest number of deletions from the adjudication list alone, with 4,55,137 names removed.

In addition to this, on the 28 February list, 2,93,822 names were deleted taking the total number of excluded voters in the district to 7,48,959.

Though Murshidabad tops the list of deletions on the basis of number in the adjudication list, overall North 24-Parganas has emerged as the district with the highest number of deletions when both lists are considered together.

According to commission data 3,25,666 names were struck off from the adjudication list but if added to the 12,60,096 deletions recorded earlier, the district accounts for the deletion of 15,82,762 voters ~ the highest among all the districts.

In South 24-Parganas, the combined deletions from both lists stand at 10,91,098, making it another heavily impacted district.

Similarly, Malda saw 2,39,375 names removed from the adjudication list, taking its total deletions to 4,59,530 when earlier figures are included.

Other districts have also witnessed notable exclusions.

In East Midnapore, a total of 1,65,345 voters have been removed, while Kolkata alone accounts for 6,97,160 deleted names across the two phases.

The Commission clarified that even before the publication of the draft rolls, around 58 lakh names had already been deleted.

This was followed by another round of removals ~ approximately five lakh ~ in the 28 February final list. Subsequently, 60,06,675 voters were placed in the “under adjudication” category for further scrutiny.

Out of this pool, data for 59,84,512 voters has now been officially released.

The Commission stated that although the cases of the remaining 22,163 voters have been disposed of, they are yet to be electronically signed.

Once that process is completed, more names could be added to the deletion list.

At the same time, there remains a possibility that some names may also be reinstated in the voter rolls depending on the final verification outcomes.

The large-scale deletions, especially in border and densely populated districts, are likely to remain a key issue in the run-up to the elections, with political parties expected to scrutinize the figures closely.
