• Shyampukur, Chowringhee, Entally top Kol deletion list

  • Kolkata: In Kolkata, for voters who were placed under adjudication, Shyampukur saw the highest deletion with 87%, followed by Chowringhee at 73.3%. Ballygunge with 74%, followed by Bhowanipore (72.5%), topped inclusion list.

The EC on Thursday released the assembly-wise addition and deletion data of voters under adjudication, reflecting a broader SIR trend, in which Kolkata north and south have been shaved off a substantial chunk of their pre-SIR voter base. The lists for Kolkata, which goes to polls on April 29, were frozen on Thursday, the last day for filing nominations for the second phase.

In Shyampukur, 2,390 were found non-eligible out of 2,759, whereas in Chowringhee, 10,424 voters were deleted out of 14,217 after judicial scrutiny. In Ballygunge, 17,769 voters were included out of 23,968 under adjudication cases, while Bhowanipore saw 10,256 inclusion out of 14,154 cases.

Out of 32,378 cases in Kolkata Port, 18,938 have been cleared, which is around 59%. Kolkata Port had the highest volume of adjudication cases.

Sabar Institute researcher Souptik Halder said, "Our analysis reveals a deeply concerning pattern in deletions across Kolkata. Shyampukur leads all assemblies, with an alarming 87% of under-adjudication cases ultimately marked as deleted. It is followed by Chowringhee and Entally, where 73.3% and 72.4%, respectively, of adjudicated voters have been removed."

He added: "These constituencies are known to have a high concentration of migrant workers, and the data reinforces our inference: the SIR is disproportionately impacting economically marginalised migrant populations. We have consistently raised concerns that Muslim communities are being disproportionately targeted and the data now strongly substantiates that."

More than 60 lakh voters were placed under judicial scrutiny across 294 assembly constituencies in Bengal.

Apart from the Kolkata constituencies, Rajarhat New Town had the highest number of deletions. Out of 31,382 cases under scrutiny, 24,132 were deleted, which is nearly 77%.

Apart from Chowringhee, Kolkata constituencies with high deletion rate are Entally with 9,092 deletions out of 12,558 (72.4%) cases, Jorasanko with 3,624 deletions out of 5,700 (63.6%) cases, Rasbehari with 5,006 deletions out of 8,157 (61.6%) cases and Cossipore-Belgachhia with 3,369 deletions out of 5,617 (60%) cases.

Constituencies that witnessed more than half of their adjudicated individuals cleared as eligible, apart from Bhowanipore and Ballygunge, were Kolkata Port and Maniktala. While Kolkata Port had the highest volume of cases (32,378), Maniktala had the fewest (1,654). Beleghata had 18,731 cases under judicial scrutiny. Out of this, 9,198 were cleared (49%).
